The announcement of Lalkaara generated considerable excitement, marking Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker’s reunion nearly 25 years after Lagaan. Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar was also set to play a pivotal role in the ambitious period drama while co-producing it with Ritesh Sidhwani. However, the film has now witnessed a major casting change, with Farhan reportedly exiting the project.
Schedule clash leads to exit
Farhan was reportedly cast in a key role in Lalkaara, which chronicles the life of legendary Indian cricketer Lala Amarnath. According to reports, he decided to step away after the film’s shooting schedule clashed with that of Neeraj Pandey’s upcoming directorial, where he also plays a significant role. Set against the backdrop of the Partition of 1947 and the historic 1952 India-Pakistan Test series, Lalkaara demands extensive cricket training and a physically demanding preparation process from its cast.
Meanwhile, Neeraj Pandey’s film, reportedly based on the life of legendary composer R.D. Burman, also requires Farhan to undergo a major physical transformation and dedicate substantial time to the role. With both projects expected to go on floors around the same time, the actor reportedly found it impossible to balance the two commitments.
Reports suggest that Farhan discussed the situation with Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker before deciding to prioritise Neeraj Pandey’s film. He will, however, continue to remain associated with Lalkaara as one of its producers.
Sidhant Gupta comes on board
The makers reportedly moved swiftly to find a replacement and approached Jubilee actor Sidhant Gupta for the role. The actor is said to have readily accepted the offer.
“Everything happened very quickly,” a source was quoted as saying. “Ashutosh was impressed with Sidhant Gupta’s breakthrough performance as Jay Khanna in Jubilee. When he suggested Sidhant’s name to Aamir, the superstar immediately backed the decision.”
Penned by Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh, Lalkaara explores themes of rivalry, friendship, patriotism and the human impact of Partition through the life of one of Indian cricket’s pioneering figures.
