Agriculture commissioner Manazir Jeelani Samoon has urged farmers to adopt crop diversification and climate-resilient farming practices to minimise the impact of the prevailing El Niño conditions.
Participating in the Raithanna–Meekosam (RMK) – El Nino Effect Mitigation Campaign at Singavaram village in Denkada mandal on Friday, the commissioner interacted with farmers and reviewed irrigation availability, fertiliser distribution, crop insurance, natural farming and farm mechanisation.
He advised farmers in water-scarce areas to cultivate pulses such as green gram and black gram, as well as millets, instead of water-intensive crops. Selecting crops based on water availability would help minimise the risk of crop losses, he said.
Dr Samoon also reviewed the implementation of the APAIMS fertiliser distribution system and sought feedback from farmers, who raised concerns over the high price of potash fertilisers. He directed officials to examine the issue and take appropriate measures.
