A 25-year-old father has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after allegedly throwing his two young daughters from the sixth-floor balcony of an apartment building in Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture, in the early hours of September 26, with police investigating whether a dispute between the suspect and his wife was behind the incident.
The suspect, Tomokazu Miura, was referred to prosecutors on September 27 after allegedly throwing his daughters, aged 4 and 1, from the balcony of his apartment at around 4:20 a.m. on September 26.
Both children landed on protective mats and other equipment that firefighters had placed below the building. Neither is believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.
A man living in the same apartment building said Miura had declared that he intended to die alongside his daughters before being taken away. “He said he was going to die too, that he intended to die,” the resident recalled.
A woman living in the building said the screams were loud enough to be heard even with her windows closed. “I could hear it even without opening the windows. It sounded like someone screaming at the top of their lungs,” she said.
Miura has remained silent during police questioning. Investigators suspect that marital problems may have contributed to the incident and are examining the circumstances leading up to the alleged crime.
