The Killing Eve star admitted: ‘I saw the sign outside the theatre with my name on it. I felt no joy.’
Actress Fiona Shaw has admitted she considered giving up acting more than a decade ago despite being flushed with success.
The 68-year-old was working on Broadway when she admits work was not giving her as much joy as it could have.
Looking back to the moment in 2013, she recalled in Good Housekeeping UK: “I was running one day between the matinee [a New York production of The Testament of Mary, a stage adaption of Colm Tóibín’s novella] and the evening performance, and I saw the sign outside the theatre with my name on it. I felt no joy. I just felt tired. I thought I might stop acting and teach.”
Thankfully Fiona carried on with the production and her career has blossomed since including She played Carolyn Martens in Killing Eve from 2018-2022 and more recently she starred in the series Baptiste (2021), and the Disney+ series Andor (2022).
Her next big screen project will see her in Sense and Sensibility’, in cinemas this month.
Asked about becoming a TV icon in her Sixties, she said: “You know, I still think of myself as a TV novice – the oldest novice you’ll ever meet! My life has surpassed any expectations that I had of it, but I don’t think I’m unique. If anything, I’m quite ordinary. And you know what? I’ve had the most fantastic life.”
Fiona says she loves to entertain guests with wife Sonali Deraniyagala when she is not working. And despite her advancing years she sees a novelty in getting older.
Fiona said: “Age is age, but I’m not un-enjoying it. I feel like a young old person. I’m new to old age, so I’m enjoying the novelty of the sloping hills. Those hills might get steeper as I age.”
Fiona also used the interview to praise her Sense and Sensibility co-star Daisy Edgar Jones.
She said: “She’s got every quality that I didn’t have at her age; she can withhold. When I was in my late 20s, I was busy saying, ‘Watch me do this!’ It took a long time to learn that the camera doesn’t want you to do any of that. I’ve got it now, I think.”
