Chennai: A 24-year-old fire and rescue department training officer from Ramanathapuram district died after collapsing on the foot-overbridge at Tambaram railway station on Sunday morning.
Rahul Mathi, son of Palani, and a resident of Paramakudi had cleared the selection process for the post of Station Fire Officer (SFO) in the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services.
According to officials, Rahul underwent six months of training at the Tambaram Fire and Rescue Training Centre from January. He subsequently continued his practical and field training at the fire and rescue training centre in Paramakudi.
On Sunday, Rahul arrived in Chennai by the Rameswaram Express along with two friends to attend a workshop scheduled to be held at the Fire and Rescue Services training centre in Red Hills.
After getting down at Tambaram railway station, Rahul and his friends were walking from Platform 5 towards the foot-overbridge when he suddenly felt unwell and collapsed on the staircase. Tambaram railway police personnel took him to the Tambaram Government Hospital in an ambulance. Doctors declared that he had died before reaching the hospital.
Tambaram railway police have registered an inquiry into the incident. The exact cause of death is yet to be established.
