Talented actor Andrew Scott has been speaking about how he struggled when playing Max Denbigh, also known as ‘C’, in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre,

Actor Andrew Scott has admitted he didn’t feel completely comfortable and was “intimidated” when he was involved in a James Bond film.

Former Fleabag and Sherlock star Scott played the villainous character Max Denbigh, also known as ‘C’ in the 2015 James Bond film Spectre which was directed by Sam Mendes But in a new interview he admitted despite being an acclaimed actor at the time he struggled on set and did not give input in a way he normally would on a role because he didn’t feel worthy of the part.

He said: “I think I allowed myself I think to be somewhat intimidated by the James Bond-yness of the whole thing. I guess I feel like there were things that I could have pushed or suggested.

“And I knew Sam really well, but it’s that feeling as an actor — I think the most important thing that you should have on a set is a level of comfort that you’re able to say, ‘What about this and what about that?’ And that you feel like you have the time. And I don’t think I felt I was, in some ways, worthy enough, when I look at it now, to push that a little bit.”

He added: “I had a great time. There were incredible actors in that — my great friend Ben Whishaw and Ralph Fiennes and Daniel [Craig], who I know and love and have worked with since, all incredibly kind people. And I love Sam.

“What I learned is that it doesn’t matter what the budget of the movie is, what the audience want to see is aliveness and daring and flair. I think that was a very important thing for me to learn.”

Scott, 49, was speaking to The Hollywood Reporter as he promoted new movie Elsinore, in which he plays Chariots of Fire actor Ian Charleson during the final stages of his life, when he was diagnosed with AIDS but refused to stop playing Hamlet at the National Theatre.

The industry magazine says there has already been chatter in the US about Scott could become the first out gay person to ever win an acting Oscar next year.

Scott also talked to the magazine about the positive effects he found after he came out. He spoke about his sexuality in 2013 and admitted he wanted to talk about it before the film Pride came out so it was “sort of done” before he was promoting that film.

Looking back he said: “It’s funny to think about it now because it feels like another lifetime ago, but there were a couple of things in maybe some of the gay press where people said, ‘Oh, he’s come out,’ but nothing major.

“No fallout. No fallout whatsoever. In fact, I would say the opposite. It’s funny. I always say that it was incredibly good because after that — I don’t know if these things are related in any way, but after that, things really started to go really well career-wise for me, for the things that I wanted. And I don’t know, I can’t imagine that not feeling comfortable in your own self for whatever reason, or not carrying around that kind of burden for some reason, I can’t imagine that that can’t have some sort of effect on your acting.”
