Florida State vs. Louisville prediction: Cardinals expose Seminoles’ shaky defense

Don’t look now, but Florida State has won two games in a row and can announce itself as an ACC contender with a win over Louisville on Friday night.

The latter part of that sentence may be a stretch, but don’t tell that to the Seminoles after they drubbed Virginia, 38-7, in Week 5.

Perhaps Mike Norvell will keep his job after all? Well, let’s not get carried away.

The Seminoles are 3.5-point underdogs in Louisville on Friday, and they’ve got Miami on deck.

Things could go pear-shaped, again, pretty quickly.

Louisville vs. Florida State odds, pick

It’s really hard to trust either of these Jekyll-and-Hyde teams.

Louisville started the campaign on the right foot, giving Ole Miss a run for its money, crushing Villanova, and then defeating SMU, but it’s gone off the rails since then for the Cardinals. They’ve lost two in a row to Wake Forest and NC State, and will see their season go up in smoke with a loss on Saturday.

Florida State has followed the opposite pattern. The Seminoles won ugly in Week 0 against New Mexico State, lost to SMU in a game that was a lot uglier than the scoreboard suggested, and then got blitzed for 50 points against Alabama. The Seminoles got right against Central Arkansas in Week 4, but nobody was expecting the performance that came against Virginia.

Quarterback Ashton Daniels has struggled this season, but he completely took over against the Cavaliers, setting a record with five rushing touchdowns.

The much-maligned defense also turned into a force against the Cavs, which was completely unexpected.

But here’s the thing: Virginia just isn’t that good.

Louisville may be scratching their heads after the last two weeks, but the Cardinals should have more than enough offensive firepower to expose a defense that has had one impressive performance this season.

Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz, who was upgraded to probable for this clash, has been more than capable under center for Louisville this season, but he’s also got the luxury of a rushing attack that is averaging 5.3 yards per attempt.

If this game were played last weekend, this number would have felt like a gift. Buy low on Louisville and sell high on Florida State.

The Play: Louisville -3.5 (-110, DraftKings)
