Hyderabad: The environs of Secunderabad and its surroundings came alive with the two-day Bonalu festivities commencing at the historic Sri Ujjaini Mahankali temple in Secunderabad on Sunday.
The lanes and bylanes in Secunderabad and its surroundings wore a festive atmosphere as residents’ welfare and youth welfare associations decorated them with colorful flowers and LED lights.
Long serpentine queues were seen near the temple with the devotees waiting since early morning to take blessings of the Goddess Sri Mahankali. The Endowments departments provided separate queues for the devotees and for the women offering ‘bonam’ to the Goddess.
Women clad in pattu sarees came to the temple and offered ‘bonam’ prepared with cooked rice laced with jaggery in a pot decorated with turmeric and vermillion as a thanksgiving for fulfilling their wishes.
Speaking to media persons after participating in prayers, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar said more than 2,500 police personnel were deployed for the smooth conduct of the festival.
“We are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to keep a tab of those moving suspiciously and on pick pockets,” he said, adding that an adequate number of SHE Teams was also deployed to maintain constant vigil on eve teasers.
The police also imposed traffic restrictions in Secunderabad and adjoining areas. Barricades were placed in the lanes to ensure a proper queue system.
