Vijayawada: AP Health authorities, also with Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) and Swasti, an NGO, have taken up a training programme for medical personnel on how to deal with pregnant women at the time of delivery to avoid maternal mortality.

In the first phase, nearly 75 health staff comprising gynaecologists, PHC medical officers, and staff nurses from Anantapur and Bapatla districts have been undergoing the training at Mangalagiri over the past two days.

During the delivery, women tend to suffer from high blood pressure and heavy bleeding which, in certain cases, could lead to convulsions, eclampsia, and, at times, death. As per statistics, 43 per cent of maternal mortality is caused mainly due to heavy bleeding and high blood pressure (20 per cent), apart from eclampsia (23 per cent).

Addressing the staff undergoing training, in-charge Health commissioner Chakradhar Babu said the training programme would continue for staff from other districts in a phased manner.

FOGSI national president-elect Dr Madhuri Patel and its AP chapter representative Dr. Susheela underscored the need to improve healthcare for pregnant women. They suggested certain measures to identify the level of eclampsia and measures to control it to avoid maternal mortality. They suggested that suspected cases could be referred to district hospitals.
