Ooty: Foresters and greens have pleaded for decibel-free Deepavali celebrations in the human settlements in and around the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) and other forest limits in the Nilgiris to save the wildlife from disturbance and distress caused by bursting of high-decibel crackers.

While the Deepavali festival is a time and season for joy, especially the youth and kids who elicit keen interest to burst crackers, it is a time of distress and concern for the wildlife arena as bursting of crackers disturb the wild animals which are accustomed to live in serene wild environs.
The problem is more in the forest and wildlife-rich Nilgiris as the foresters and greens need to take extra efforts to make the residents in the forest fringes understand the problem to restrain from bursting crackers.
Forest department sources said the MTR administration will impose restrictions on bursting crackers in the villages and hamlets in the jungle fringes to ensure that deafening noise of the crackers and glowing fireworks do not affect the wildlife and the free-ranging animals in and around the MTR and its nearby areas which is the hub of a healthy tiger population besides a good number of other wild animals and avian species.
Forest officials will be visiting the villages and tourist cottages and resorts in the jungle periphery, appealing to the people not to burst crackers and asking them to celebrate a green Deepavali so as to be sympathetic to the wild animals in the woods.
