The Tennessee Titans are on their bye week, and more outlets are talking about Cam Ward and his Week 8 performance against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The latest to weigh in on Ward is former Titans general manager Ran Carthon, who sat down with Jordan Schultz to talk about the Titans and Jeffery Simmons, and had some interesting things to say about Ward.
“You know, it was Incarnate Word, it was Washington State, it was Miami, and then the Titans for two years there. That’s five different offenses in five years. And so I think that’s where people need to exercise a little bit of patience.” Carthon said, “Look, everybody was ready to give up on Bryce Young a few years ago, right? And, oh, he’s not it, he’s too little, he can’t do, he can’t do, he can’t do. But when you look at his play, Bryce Young has gotten better every year. And again, his stuff started the same way as Cam’s — multiple coordinators, multiple head coaches. These guys need consistency.”

While some may discount the need for consistency in a player’s development, it is a real issue that is becoming more apparent every year in the NIL age, and college quarterback development is questionable at best. Even the best prospects struggle at the college level, and players changing schools every offseason has been a major factor.
Five offenses in five seasons at any level is difficult and often leads to a lack of focus on mechanics and development. Ward has shown that when his mechanics are right, he is a better quarterback, and although it is frustrating, that is where the NFL is with the way the college game is played..
