Hyderabad: Four Intermediate first-year students from government institutions will travel to Japan later this week under the Sakura science programme, an initiative of the Japan Science and Technology Agency that introduces students to scientific research, technology and cultural exchange. The students were selected through a state-level screening process after qualifying in the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) and said that they were eager to interact with scientists, meet students from other countries and understand how Japan rebuilt itself into a technologically advanced nation.

The selected students are G. Shivanjali from Telangana Model School and Junior College, Elgandal in Karimnagar district; Ch. Akshaya from Telangana Residential Junior College, Hasanparthy in Hanamkonda district; B. Parusha from IIIT Mahbubnagar; and B. Venu from Telangana Model School, Irkode in Siddipet district. Their visit is scheduled from May 24 to 30.

“This programme is not just about science and technology, but also about understanding Japan’s culture and discipline,” Shivanjali said. “I am excited about interacting with Japanese scientists and intellectuals and seeing how a small country that went through the devastation of atomic bombs became so developed. I feel India can also learn from their discipline and work culture.”

Shivanjali said she had always wanted to visit Tokyo and described the selection process as highly competitive. She had earlier received the NMMS scholarship and secured top marks in her Class X board examinations. “Around 33 students were shortlisted initially, after which a state-level examination was conducted.”

Akshaya added that students from different districts participated in the state-level test, which covered English, Mathematics and Science based on the Class X syllabus. “Our flight to Japan is on May 23, and I am looking forward to learning more about Japan’s science and technology and bringing back valuable knowledge to India,” Akshaya said. “My parents are extremely happy and proud. They encouraged me to make the best use of this opportunity and represent Telangana well.”

She said she was especially excited to meet students from Japan and other participating countries such as South Africa and Ghana. “I want to become an IAS officer and serve in India. I hope to learn from global exposure, gain knowledge and experiences abroad, and bring those learnings back to our country,” she said.

The programme is conducted under the Japan Science High School Programme of the Japan Science and Technology Agency under Japan’s Ministry of Education.
