Four rising college football coaches who could land a premier job this offseason

The college football coaching carousel rarely waits for the regular season to end. With openings starting to emerge across the country, successful mid-major coaches could soon find themselves interviewing for jobs that seemed out of reach just weeks ago.

Florida State, Maryland and NC State have already entered the market for a new head man, and more vacancies are bound to follow. This will create opportunities for coaches who have proved they can win without the resources of college football’s biggest brands. Four names in particular deserve attention, though their cases are far from identical.

Jason Eck-New Mexico Lobos

Eck is building one of the season’s most compelling turnaround stories. After leading Idaho to three consecutive FCS playoff appearances, he took over New Mexico and delivered a 9–4 record in 2025. The Lobos are 7-1in 2026, ranked 22nd in the latest AP poll, and have heavily relied on a stifling defense.

Eck has shown he can improve a roster quickly without the recruiting advantages enjoyed by major programs. His defensive results and experience coaching offensive lines make him an intriguing long-term program builder.

The question is whether he can translate that success against stronger competition. One impressive season doesn’t guarantee readiness for leading a national championship contender, but Eck’s current trajectory makes him worth watching.

Spencer Danielson-Boise State Broncos

Danielson has already won at a program with meaningful expectations. Boise State went 12–2 and reached the College Football Playoff in 2024, then finished 9–5 in 2025. The Broncos are 7-1 this season and ranked No. 20 in the latest AP poll.

Danielson has helped maintain Boise State’s winning tradition through a changing college football landscape. A Power Four school could view him as a coach who understands how to build a winning culture.

His next challenge would be proving that success translates to the big stage, where recruiting battles and expectations are different.

Lance Taylor-Western Michigan Broncos

Taylor’s résumé is still developing. After going 4–8 in his first season in 2023, he led Western Michigan to a 10–4 record and a MAC championship in 2025. The Broncos currently sit at 6-3 on the season.

His experience at Notre Dame, Louisville and in the NFL gives him a broader background than his current job might suggest. Still, another strong finish would help strengthen his candidacy. Taylor looks more like a coach building toward a bigger opportunity than an obvious choice for one of the premier openings.

Jeff Traylor-UTSA Roadrunners

Traylor has the strongest established résumé on this list. Since taking over UTSA in 2020, he has built the Roadrunners into a consistent winner. They are 7–1 in 2026 and unbeaten in American Conference play.

His Texas recruiting connections could appeal to programs looking to rebuild their talent pipelines. The Baylor Bears are a particularly logical possibility. The Bears have an opening, and Traylor has emerged in early reporting as a potential candidate.

Unlike the other coaches here, Traylor doesn’t need another season to prove he can win. His next move depends on finding the right fit.

Winning is the first step

None of these coaches is guaranteed a promotion. Success at a smaller program doesn’t always translate to the Power Four, where recruiting and the pressure of sky-high expectations can overwhelm accomplished coaches from the smaller ranks.

Nonetheless, the carousel is beginning to move, and these four have given athletic directors reasons to take a look.
