Kelsey Grammer just won’t let Dr. Frasier Crane die with dignity.
Even after the recent Frasier reboot was canceled by Paramount+, Grammer insisted that the show could still find a new, better home on some other network or streamer. He also blamed the revival’s failure on Paramount’s lack of passion, instead of, say, the show’s lack of Frasier cast members.
Now Grammer has succeeded in bringing Frasier Crane back — not for a TV show, but for a cringey Amazon promotional video.
Don’t Miss
Apparently all 11 seasons of the original Frasier are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. And to help sell the classic sitcom/surprisingly effective sleep aid, the megacorporation rebuilt Frasier’s KACL recording studio for a series of YouTube videos starring Grammer. The first one simply featured the Money Plane star watching old clips of the show and sharing some of his behind-the-scenes memories.
But in the newest video, Grammer is no longer himself. Instead, he steps into the character of Frasier Crane once again, this time using his psychiatric skills to address “Gen Z’s top concerns.” In other words, it’s a sweaty attempt for Grammer to make himself seem vaguely relevant by reacting to an assortment of contemporary trends and buzzwords.
“I’m in love, but I think she’s A.I., can you help me Dr. Crane?” one fake youth asks.
“Well, depending on who programmed her, she might be the perfect girl,” Frasier responds, adding, “Is she cute?”
“Dr. Crane, I think I accidentally joined a polycule, how do I get out of it” someone else inquires.
“Unless that’s some sort of a strange geometric shape, I have no idea,” he fires back.
What’s really shocking is how bad, and distinctly un-Frasier-like Grammer’s improv skills are. After a question about ghosting, Dr. Crane replies, “In the old tradition, ghosting would mean you’d have to kill them.” What???
He also namechecks pop-culture figures like Paul Simon and John Wayne, while the Frasier from TV would be more likely to reference Gilbert & Sullivan and some opera star most of us have never heard of. We’re not even going to mention the fact that Grammer couldn’t even be bothered to take off his wedding ring to play the famously single Frasier.
Another “caller” shares a story about a doctor texting responding to a photo of a mole with a thumbs down emoji — you know, that common Gen Z concern — prompting Frasier to muse, “I think moles are pretty great, they’ve been a part of our culture for thousands and thousands of years.” And his riff about the differences between goat milk and oat milk is painful to watch.
Hopefully this will be the last commercial we ever get featuring Frasier Crane. Then again, for all we know, Taco Bell has already hired Grammer to pitch their new line of tossed salad and scrambled egg burritos.
