Novak Djokovic lost from two sets up to exit the French Open against teenager Joao Fonseca in an extraordinary upset, which means a new men’s grand slam champion will be crowned in Paris this fortnight.

Following the shock exit of favourite Jannik Sinner and with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz absent due to injury, the 39-year-old Djokovic faced a golden opportunity to win a record 25th grand slam title with his two biggest rivals removed from his path.

On Wednesday, meanwhile, Elena Rybakina crashed out on the women’s tournament as the second seed fell to a three-set defeat to Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva. The women’s draw remains full of potential winners, though, with defending champion Coco Gauff having had a mixed clay-court season thus far but arriving with a point to prove after a tough defeat in the Italian Open final.

The American returns to action alongside US Open champion and last year’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka, four-time Roland-Garros winner Iga Swiatek, and a rejuvenated Elina Svitolina, who recently won her biggest title in eight years on the clay in Rome to put herself among the contenders.
