A day after senior Congress leader HK Patil was left out of the Karnataka Cabinet expansion, political discontent in Gadag district intensified on Tuesday with 19 members of the Gadag-Betageri City Municipal Council submitting resignation letters in a show of solidarity with the veteran legislator.
The team of councillors, including 15 elected representatives and four nominated members, went to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and submitted the letters to Deputy Commissioner CN Sridhar, who is also the administrator of the Gadag-Betageri CMC.
Before this, they participated in a protest, displaying copies of their resignation letters.
Explaining their decision, the councillors said the Congress high command had failed to do justice to HK Patil despite his long political experience and contribution to the party.
The members urged the administrator to accept their resignation letters.
Holding placards and photographs of HK Patil, his supporters gathered at the Old Deputy Commissioner’s Office Circle in Gadag and staged a protest by forming a human chain.
The protest also witnessed strong demands for greater representation for North Karnataka. Some protestors stated that if this neglect of North Karnataka continues, that may lead for the demand for a North Karnataka state.
Meanwhile, in an emotional gesture during the protest, Rachappa Gadad, a supporter of HK Patil, took a public vow that he would not wear a shirt until HK Patil is made a minister.
