Garret Anderson was one of the most renowned and iconic former MLB players. This is especially the case when we look at the Los Angeles Angels’ history. Now, his fans are in a state of mourning after it was reported that Garret has passed away. According to reports, he was 53 years old when he breathed his last. The Angels confirmed his passing on Friday, April 17, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Teresa and their three children.

After Garret Anderson’s death, the Los Angeles Angels honoured the former MLB player with a sweet message. In the statement, Angels owner, Arte Moreno wrote, “The Angels organisation is mourning the loss of one of our franchise’s most beloved icons.” He recalled how Garret was a cornerstone of their organisation throughout the 15 seasons that he played with them when he was alive. He wrote that Garret’s stoic presence in the outfield and their clubhouse elevated the Angels into an era of continued success. He added:

“Garret will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class, and loyalty throughout his career and beyond. His admiration and respect for the game was immeasurable. We extend our deepest condolences to Garret’s wife Teresa, daughters Brianne and Bailey, son Garret ‘Trey’ Anderson III, and his entire family.”

As of now, Garret Anderson’s cause of death has not been announced. However, according to a report by TMZ, Garret passed away at 52 after suffering a medical emergency at his home in Newport Beach, California. With his career spanning more than 17 years, Garret spent the majority of it with the Los Angeles Angels. Eventually, he became the franchise’s all-time leader in games played, when it came to hits, runs, RBIs and total bases.

For those unaware, Garret was a three-time All-Star. At the time, he had played a significant role in his team’s 2002 World Series victory and finished fourth in AL MVP voting that season. As per reports, this was after he successfully hit .306 with 29 home runs and 123 RBIs. Additionally, Garret had also earned All-Star MVP honours in 2003. In the same year, he also won the Home Run Derby.

Garret Anderson was among MLB’s most durable hitters

While Garret was still playing in the MLB, he was known for his durability. Over the first years that he played, he had reportedly averaged 156 games per season. He finished his career with 2,529 hits, 287 home runs and a .293 batting average. When Garret was at the peak of his game, especially from 1997 to 2003, he ranked second only to Derek Jeter in total hits. It is worth mentioning that in 2000, Garret became the second player in MLB history to hit more home runs (35) than walks (24) in a single season.

Garret Anderson’s career from draft pick to being inducted into the Angels Hall of Fame

Garret Anderson, who was a native of Los Angeles, was selected in the first round of the 1990 draft by the Los Angeles Angels. He made his MLB debut four years later, in 1994. In 1995, Garret finished as a runner-up in the AL Rookie of the Year voting that year. After his MLB debut, he remained with the Angels until 2008. Following this, he went on to have rather brief stints with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers. Garret retired in 2011 and a few years later, was inducted into the Angels Hall of Fame in 2016.

For those unaware, Garret’s ties with the MLB did not stop after his retirement, as he then worked as a broadcaster for the Angels. While reflecting on his career at the time of his retirement, Garret had said:

“It is with mixed emotions that I have decided to retire from baseball. I know I will miss many aspects of the game, the grind of playing every day, hitting with the game on the line.”
