The Cleveland Browns have agreed terms on a trade to send two-time defensive player of the year Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams.

The trade is pending Garrett’s physical examination and sees the Browns receive a 2027 first-round pick and pass rusher Jared Verse in return.

Garrett – who broke the NFL record for single season sacks with 23 in his last campiagn – with had previously issued a trade request but ended speculation when he signed a four-year, $160m (£118m) extension in 2025 with more than $122m (£90m) guaranteed.

Myles Garrett gets his 23rd sack of the season for the Cleveland Browns, breaking the NFL sacks in a season record.

However, the Browns finished the season 5-12 and plummeted to their second successive NFC north fourth-place finish, meaning that the franchise has missed the playoffs in seven of Garrett’s nine seasons.

The defensive end reignited trade speculation when he missed the Browns’ voluntary off-season training programme, and did not meet with new head coach Todd Monken after he replaced Kevin Stefanski earlier this year.

The Browns agreed to a restructured contract with Garrett that deferred $29m (£21m) dollars in bonus payments to September, giving Cleveland salary cap space to trade the pass-rusher – though they will still suffer a combined $40m (£29m) hit from Garrett’s contract in the next two years.

The trade ends a lengthy nine-year tenure for Garrett since his selection by the Browns as the No 1 draft pick in 2017. He will join a Rams side that were one game away from the Super Bowl last season, and boast one Super Bowl title and a staggering 10 playoff wins under head coach Sean McVey.

The Los Angeles side will no doubt be buoyed by the addition of the best defensive player in the NFL.
