Gary Lineker has received more than £1m in dividends from his podcast, The Rest Is Football, his first major gig after quitting the BBC last year as the corporation’s highest paid presenter
Gary Lineker has taken home more than £1 million from his podcast business that includes The Rest Is Football – which he co-hosts with Alan Shearer and Micah Richards.
Unsurprisingly, the World Cup this summer helped boost audience numbers to the series that was streamed on Netflix as part of a reported £14m deal.
But it remains an impressive payday for the former footballer who quit his role on Match of the Day last year, despite being the BBC’s highest paid presenter.
Lineker, 65, is a shareholder in Goalhanger Podcasts, who produces popular shows including The Rest Is History and The Rest Is Politics. Goalhanger handed its shareholders over £5 million in dividends last year – Lineker is understood to have received more than £1 million from the payout.
Lineker founded Goalhanger with former ITV controller Tony Pastor and ex-BBC executive Jack Davenport in 2019.
The trio originally held equal shares in the business, although this was reduced after American investment company The Chernin Group bought a minority stake this year.
Lineker’s podcast empire has continued to grow since he stepped away from the BBC.
He left the corporation in May 2025 after an incredible career there, having spent more than two decades as the face of Match of the Day.
In the last annual report, Lineker’s salary was listed as being around £1.35 million. His 2025/2026 earnings came from his work on the Match Of The Day highlights show and other football coverage.
Now, his earnings from Goalhanger have added another substantial sum to his post-BBC income.
The business was recently named Britain’s fastest-growing private company after recording sales of £37.9 million in 2025, according to the Sunday Times ranking.
