Gayle King Reveals She Stayed Silent About Her Ex-Husband Cheating Due To Her Children, ‘So Pitiful’

Popular journalist, Gayle King, who has never shied away from sharing details about her life, recently appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast, during which she shared details about her ex-husband, William Bumpus cheating on her. For the unversed, William cheated on Gayle with one of latter’s close friends, years ago. It is worth mentioning that Gayle King and William were officially divorced in 1993; however, they continued to co-parent their children.

Recently, Gayle King had a conversation on the Call Her Daddy podcast, during which she shared details about her ex-husband, William Bumpus cheating on her with one of her close friends. During the podcast, the 71-year-old host shared that decades ago, she caught her ex-husband, when she unexpectedly returned home after her flight got cancelled.

She was with her two children. Soon after she entered, the house alarm was activated, after which her then-husband, wearing just a towel, rushed towards her and tried to stop her. Eventually, when she found  out that the woman was her close friend, Gayle King went ahead and called her friends’ husband to tell him about the affair. Gayle King was quoted as saying:

“He comes flying out of the room. He’s got a towel on and he goes, ‘You can’t come in.’ I said, ‘What do you mean I can’t come in? What are you talking about?’ He told, ‘someone’s here’. I start searching the house because I didn’t believe him. I didn’t believe him. I get down and there she is, cowering behind the door in my towel, Alex. It was a nice bath sheet. “I said, ‘I can’t believe that you are here and you are doing this. I even said, ‘I thought we were friends.’ I sounded so pitiful.”

Further, in the interview, Gayle King explained that due to the house alarm, police had come to her house and they were pleasantly surprised to see her. Gayle mentioned that the police also asked for her autograph. Apart from this, Gayle King also stated that she preferred to stay silent only because her two kids were young and knew her close friend. In her words:

“The police came, and they said, ‘Hey, oh my God, it’s Gayle King! I wanted to say, ‘Could you take out the trash?’ But I didn’t. Because I was thinking, ‘The kids are here. I don’t want anybody to know.’ That was my main thought — I don’t want anybody to know… I kept thinking, I don’t want it to be a scene because they’re little. They know this person.”

During the same podcast, Gayle King also shared details about her parting ways with William Bumpus and how she convinced herself to co-parent their children, despite him cheating. Gayle explained that she decided to get divorced because “I didn’t like who I was. Who wants to live like that?” Talking about the divorce and co-parenting relationship, Gayle King stated:

“I realized he hadn’t really changed, but I was turning into such a shrew. I would be out in the garage feeling the hood of the car to see if it was warm. I was going through his phone. And I thought, I don’t want to live like this, only to find out he was cheating again. The kids love their dad. The dad loves the kids, so you’ve got to figure out a way to navigate it.” 

Who is Gayle King’s ex-husband?

If reports are to be believed, Gayle King’s ex-husband, William Bumpus is a former lawyer, born in Connecticut. He tied the knot with Gayle King in 1982, only to get divorced in 1993. Since then, he has maintained a private life. However, in 2016, he came forward and admitted to cheating on Gayle King. He released a statement, in which he apologised for his actions as well.
