Chennai:Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has decided to intensify solid waste management measures, expedite biomining at the Perungudi and Kodungaiyur dumpyards and take stringent action against unauthorised advertising hoardings as part of efforts to improve the city’s cleanliness.

The directions were issued by municipal administration and water supply department additional chief secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi at a review meeting on solid waste management and ongoing development projects at the Secretariat on Friday.

Bedi instructed GCC to ensure that households segregate waste at source, in accordance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. Sanitation workers collecting household waste should also maintain segregation by using four-colour bins in collection vehicles.

GCC was also directed to conduct intensive cleanliness drives at regular intervals at bus shelters, burial grounds, slum areas and parks. Mechanical road sweeping operations should be closely monitored to keep roads clean.

Bedi instructed officials to expedite biomining operations at Perungudi and Kodungaiyur and complete the reclamation of accumulated waste. He also called for planting saplings in the reclaimed areas.

Bulk waste generators should segregate waste at source and hand it over to GCC or its authorised agencies, he said, and directed officials to impose fines on those violating the requirements.

On the removal of illegal advertisements, he called for making Chennai free of unauthorised hoardings and posters. Officials were to ensure the structural stability of permitted hoardings, immediately remove unauthorised ones and take action against owners who had not paid the fees.

Bedi asked the officials to expedite construction of the Ganeshapuram flyover and two rainwater storage tanks planned in the area.

He directed the Corporation to intensify measures to control the stray dog population and ensure rabies vaccination for all dogs. Fines should be imposed on those who allow cattle to roam freely, he said.

Commissioner, Dr. G.S. Sameeran, joint commissioners C. Saravanan (works) and K. Karpagam (education), deputy commissioner (health) Thackeray Shubham Gnyandevrao, zonal deputy commissioners, chief engineers and other officials attended the meeting.
