Genelia Deshmukh’s Jamdani sari finds its match in layered navratna jewellery

Amid a broader shift towards textile-first dressing, Genelia Deshmukh recently appeared in a Jamdani sari from Chokhana, a rare craft upheld by about 300 weavers. The look draws from an Ahimsa Paithani-inspired narrative, incorporating a Kota zari-like structure that emphasises on detailing and lightness.

Set against a muted gold-beige base, the sari features a mix of geometric and floral motifs in pink, green, purple, lime, saffron and grey alongside fine white jaal work that creates a soft lattice across the body. These motifs were individually inserted into the fabric by hand, resulting in precise patterning that enhanced its airy, fluid quality.

A delicately woven border frames the sari, while the pallu features a denser pattern, creating a subtle shift in visual weight. Despite its richness, the fabric retains an almost sheer lightness—characteristic of Jamdani—making it particularly suited to extended wear in ceremonial settings.

The styling by Karisma Gulatidraws from traditional Maharashtrian jewellery, with navratna pieces taking centre stage. A layered navratna necklace by Nornament and a Raani haar by Jevraat create a rich base, while gemstone rings by Joules and classic earrings add detail without feeling heavy. A pearl maang tikka from Curio Cottage Jewellery and a personalised mangalsutra bracelet with an “R” by Limelight lab-grown diamond jewellery bring in a personal touch to the ensemble.

Hair and beauty remain aligned with the look’s traditional cues, featuring a centre-parted bun and minimal makeup.

From Vogue‘s fashion desk:

“Lighten up the look by removing the neckpieces, let the ornate sari take centre stage. Keep the rest of the jewellery pieces as they are,” says Manglien Gangte, Vogue India fashion associate.
