HYDERABAD: The GHMC has expanded its free doorstep collection service for old mattresses and bulky furniture across all six of its zones, aiming to reduce illegal dumping and improve scientific waste management.

Under the initiative, residents can schedule a pickup by scanning a QR code provided by GHMC on its website. The discarded items will be collected from homes and sent for recycling and processing through authorised channels.
The civic body said the service is intended to prevent bulky household waste from being dumped on roadsides, open spaces, lakes and stormwater drains, where it often creates sanitation and environmental concerns.
The facility is now available across Secunderabad, Khairathabad, Golconda, Charminar, Rajendranagar and Shamshabad zones.
Officials said mattresses, sofas, tables, cupboards and other large household items are often difficult for residents to dispose of through regular waste collection systems. The dedicated pickup service is expected to provide a convenient alternative while supporting recycling efforts.
