HYDERABAD: The GHMC will organise the next edition of Project Udvasana, an attempt to collect old deity photographs, damaged puja frames, broken idols and other sacred materials, on Saturday from 8.30 to 11 am. Residents can mail inquiries to sustainability.cure@gmail.com for details.
Many households preserve these items because there has never been a proper disposal system. In many cases, such items are left under trees, near temples or in public spaces, eventually becoming part of the municipal waste stream.
A statement said Project Udvasana bridges this gap by combining traditional religious practices with responsible waste management. Citizens can bring their worshipped items to any designated collection centre, where the items will first undergo Udvasana Puja, to respectfully withdraw the divine presence. The materials will then be scientifically segregated for reuse and refurbishment wherever possible and environmentally responsible recycling will be done.
The two previous collection drives recorded a combined 163 drop-offs (100 in the first drive and 63 in the second), with nearly 500 kgs of worshipped sacred items collected for dignified processing.
