Giants vs. Commanders prediction: Big Blue puts up a fight on the road

The Giants are a prime example of the oddities of an NFL season.

They comfortably leading the NFC East entering Week 5 despite losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart to a season-ending injury in Week 2. They scored 18 points combined over a two-week stretch then exploded for 36 points in Week 4.

Fans of Big Blue will happily take the results, but anyone who says they know what to expect from the Giants week-to-week, including the G-Men themselves, should take a lie detector test.

They head to Maryland to face the Commanders this week, who are 3.5-point home favorites with quarterback Jayden Daniels back under center after an elbow injury.

Giants vs. Commanders prediction

The Jameis Winston experience was on full display last week.

He made some risky throws that turned into big plays for the Giants, including touchdowns to Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields and Theo Johnson.

He also had some confounding interceptions — one on an overthrow to Isaiah Likely and another that was a gift to the Cardinals defense.

The risk-reward proposition comes with the territory when Winston is your quarterback, but the Giants have to roll with it as he’s their best option at quarterback.

The Commanders will have their starting QB back but won’t have Stefon Diggs, who is out with a hamstring injury. Terry McLaurin, who is also dealing with hamstring, will be a game-time decision. If Daniels is close to fully healthy, he should still be effective for Washington, but losing both top targets will be a blow.

Betting on the NFL?

The real concern for Washington should be its defense, which has allowed 30 points in three consecutive games. Their pass defense has allowed 11 touchdowns through the air this season, which is tied for the most in the NFL.

Winston should be able to move the ball against the Commanders. His turnovers may give the Commanders extra opportunities to score on offense, but he can still take advantage of a susceptible defense and keep Big Blue in this game late.

I’ll take the points with the Giants on the road.

The Pick: Giants +3.5 (-110, DraftKings Sportsbook)
