KAKINADA: Continuous heavy rainfall for over five days following the Arnab and Murasu cyclones has caused streams, reservoirs, and irrigation tanks to overflow, flooding several low-lying areas in the East and West Godavari districts.

Floodwater has entered residential colonies, inundated national highways and roads, disrupted normal life, and brought transport to a standstill. Several residents have been unable to leave their homes, as roads and streets remain submerged.

Water from the Sathupalli and Aswaraopeta streams flowed into the Jalleru and Sangam streams before reaching the Yerrakalva through the Karatam Krishnamurthy Reservoir at Jangareddygudem. As a result, the Yerrakalva and Yanamadurru drains overflowed, flooding several areas of Bhimavaram, Nidadavole, and Tadepalligudem, as well as the Devarapalli national highway.

Bhimavaram is continuing to face the flood threat, as the Yanamadurru drain remains overflowing. Rising water level in the drain is reversing the flow in drainage channels, inundating low-lying areas of Mentevarithota, Durgapuram, and nearby localities. Officials have sounded an alert and issued a second flood warning in view of the rising water level in Yanamadurru drain.

Municipal commissioner Ramachandra Reddy has commissioned additional pumping motors to drain the water. Bhimavaram MLA P. Anjaneyulu is visiting the flood-affected areas and assuring residents of support.

West Godavari district collector C. Nagarani directed officials to drain the water from localities under water on a war footing. Gosthani River is in spate near Palakoderu and Tanuku. Floodwater has entered the Palakoderu substation, raising concerns over.

Several villages in Nidadavole constituency, including Singavaram, Rayampeta, Tillupalem, Subbarajupeta, Indiranagar, Kamsalipalem, Sankarapuram, Thimmarajupalem, and Settipeta, are severely affected by floods. Officials have arranged three boats to evacuate residents and shift them to rehabilitation centres. Breakfast and lunch are being provided to nearly 1,000 people at the relief centres.

The overflowing Rallavagu has inundated Chagallu, Nandamuru, Pasivedala, Dharmavaram, and surrounding villages, leaving several families severely affected. Several areas in Gopalapuram constituency have been inundated.

Tourism minister Kandula Durgesh visited the flood-hit areas, including Indiranagar, Rayipeta, Danamma Talli temple area, Tirugudem, Anjaneyapuram, Tallapalem, and Thimmarajupalem. He travelled on tractors and motorcycles and waded through knee-deep water to reach the affected residents. He assured them of assistance and advised them to remain vigilant for the next two days. He handed over essential commodities to flood-hit residents.
