KAKINADA: Floods in the Godavari River have started subsiding on Sunday. But normalcy remains elusive, particularly in several low-lying villages across the Godavari region like Kukkunuru Velerupadu, Chinturu, Kunavaram, V.R. Puram and Yetapaka in Polavaram district.
Transport facility has not been restored in 16 mandals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. Official sources said it will take two or three days for people to return from rehabilitation colonies to their villages.
Various district administrations have intensified relief and rehabilitation efforts. Essential commodities are being supplied to rehabilitation centres for people evacuated from flood-affected areas.
Power supply is yet to be restored in many villages of the flood-hit areas.
Inflows in the Godavari River have started falling from Sunday morning at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowleswaram of East Godavari district. They had been 14,61,222 cusecs in the morning and fell to 13,96,738 cusecs by 9 p.m.
Polavaram district collector K. Dinesh Kumar said water level of Godavari River at Bhadrachalam has dropped to 42.10 feet and is further receding, while the Sabari River at Chinturu is flowing at 37.60 feet and subsiding. The situation is currently under control.
Dinesh Kumar said all flood warnings in Chinturu division have been withdrawn. However, he wanted people to remain vigilant and strictly follow the instructions of officials. He said that 72 villages have been affected due to the floods in Polavaram district across Chinturu, Kunavaram, V.R. Puram and Yetapaka mandals. 2,124 people had been relocated to safe areas. 971 houses had been submerged.
The Polavaram collector said control rooms are being operated round the clock at Chinturu Sub-Collector’s office and Tahsildar’s office.
Electricity department said of the 8,195 services affected, 4,780 have been restored. Employees are continuing to revive electricity connections in the remaining areas.
Medical and Health officials said that 149 pregnant women have been shifted to community health centres. Adequate stocks of medicines are available at hospitals, PHCs and sub-centres. Anti-venom and anti-rabies vaccines have been made available. Generators have been provided at six PHCs.
Movement of vehicles remains suspended in Konaseema district as there is about three feet of water over the Ganti Pedapudi, Pichukullanka-Ravulapalem, and Ainavilli Lanka causeways. Konaseema district collector R. Mahesh Kumar said steps are being taken to facilitate traffic through alternative routes near Mamidikuduru.
Joint collector Waikhom Nydia Devi visited Appanapalli, B. Doddavaram, and Pedapatnam Lanka villages to oversee relief operations.
