Hyderabad: Golconda Fort is now better protected from lightning with the installation of two advanced technology conductors by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The hilltop fort, prone to lightning strikes, can now withstand strikes up to 120 metres.

The 23‑metre‑high conductors will safeguard the upper areas, including the durbar hall. The works cost Rs 10 lakh. Acting on instructions from ASI superintending archaeologist Dr Nihildas, similar conductors have been installed at Ramappa, Warangal Fort and Thousand Pillar Temple.

Every corner of Golconda Fort is now under round‑the‑clock surveillance, with additional CCTV cameras covering all public movement, said Mallesham, conservation assistant, ASI.

To aid specially‑abled visitors, a ramp has been built at the entrance. Solar‑powered automatic lights have been fitted to improve security and ease night‑time guarding.

QR codes at 20 locations provide details of the fort’s history, its builders and galleries, in Hindi, English and Telugu, through text and video.
