Kalaburagi : Focused interventions by the state government, sustained monitoring by education officials, and active involvement of elected representatives, local leaders and organisations appear to have paid off, with Kalyana Karnataka districts scripting a remarkable improvement in the SSLC results declared on Thursday.

Even as coastal districts continued to dominate the rankings — with Dakshina Kannada topping at 98.40 per cent, followed by Udupi (98.18 per cent) and Uttara Kannada (98.09 per cent) — it was the sharp improvement in traditionally low-performing districts that stood out this year.

Yadgir recorded the highest jump in the state, with its pass percentage soaring from 62.08 per cent in 2024–25 to 91.89 per cent this year — an increase of nearly 30 percentage points, the highest among all districts. Kalaburagi, despite remaining at the bottom of the ranking table with 85.06 per cent, registered a significant rise from 56.89 per cent last year, marking an improvement of over 28 points.

The recovery trend extended across the Kalyana Karnataka region. Raichur improved from 75 per cent to 94.41 per cent (up 19.41 points), while Bidar rose from 73.35 per cent to 92.18 per cent. Ballari and Koppal too recorded gains of over 14 percentage points each, while Vijayanagara further consolidated its performance at 96.39 per cent.

The momentum extended to several north Karnataka districts. Haveri improved from 80.9 per cent to 96.87 per cent (a rise of 15.97 percentage points), Dharwad from 79.93 per cent to 95.59 per cent (15.66 points), Chikkodi from 79.94 per cent to 94.09 per cent (14.15 points), and Vijayapura from 78.85 per cent to 94.17 per cent (15.32 points), reflecting consistent double-digit growth across the region.

Noting that several districts, especially in Kalyana Karnataka, were lagging behind, elected representatives, officials, local leaders and organisations took it up as a mission and initiated a series of measures.

Officials attributed the improvement to targeted academic interventions by the education department led by Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, along with officials led by Additional Chief Secretary Rashmi Mahesh. The role of local leadership, including minister Priyank Kharge and other elected representatives, was also seen as crucial in ensuring sustained follow-up at the district level.

The measures— including close monitoring of underperforming students, targeted academic support, providing study material, and extensive remedial coaching — helped improve results across north Karnataka districts.

“We put in a lot of effort for this improvement. Our target was 90 per cent, and we have now reached 85.06 per cent from last year’s 56.89 per cent,” the Kalaburagi DDPI told Deccan Chronicle.

Officials said that apart from early interventions in the academic year, three rounds of preparatory examinations helped students and teachers identify areas of improvement. Special teams were also formed to monitor schools and track students requiring additional support, contributing to the sharp rise in pass percentages.
