Graham Norton is a beloved household name, with more than 20 years in the industry and a stack of BAFTAs to his name. His hit chat show, The Graham Norton Show, has been on our screens since the 2000s, welcoming everyone from Jackie Chan and Robin Williams to Robert Downey Jr and Madonna.
Over the years, Graham has rubbed shoulders with countless Hollywood legends — and it seems he has some strong views on one well-known feature of LA culture: plastic surgery. And he didn’t hold back.
Speaking to his podcast co-host Maria McErlane, Graham responded to a message from a listener about her friend, who had decided to go down that route. Maria joked: “Keep your wonky nose out of her business.”
The Graham Norton Show host laughed along, cheekily suggesting she keep her “ugly, ill-formed nose out”, before adopting a more measured stance on the subject.
Speaking during an episode of the Wanging On podcast, Graham said: “She told you she was getting a boob job over a year ago. Boobs have not been touched. I think she’s just coming up with a shopping list of things she’d like to have done.”
“You know, and people do, you know, we all talk about what we’d like to have done, but then don’t do it.”
He said that, when all’s said and done, the choice was entirely her friend’s — and the only thing she could do was reassure her she looked fantastic, whatever the outcome.
“You know, everyone in LA is telling each other they all look great. Whereas actually, someone should just step in and go, ‘You all look like you’ve escaped a hotel fire’, but nobody says that.”
Maria also disclosed that Graham had taken another swipe at an unnamed individual’s cosmetic procedures. “I think you said the other day, you made a quote the other day. I can’t remember who you were talking about.
“‘Looks like some skin has been stretched over a light bulb’. That’s a really good image to have in your mind.”
Maria proposed that cosmetic surgery could prove “addictive”. She thoughtfully remarked: “Whatever you do to the exterior, you are still the same person inside. And quite often people think that fixing the outside as they see it will somehow fix the unhappiness inside. And it doesn’t.”
Graham’s comments come after he previously shared that he was once close to Star Wars star Carrie Fisher, first meeting her during filming for Ruby Wax’s BBC Two show, Ruby.
However, the iconic TV presenter apparently “didn’t really care” for the sci-fi favourite while growing up.
In May, he revealed during a separate podcast episode: “I didn’t really care about Star Wars at all, but years later, there was a time where Ruby Wax did this chat show where it was kind of a dinner table and Ruby had people and you chatted to each other.
“I was doing one with Ruby and it was the first time I ever met Carrie Fisher and so before the show, Ruby said to me, ‘Look, I know Carrie, so I can’t ask her about Star Wars, can you ask the Star Wars questions?'”
“And so I did, and from that day on, Carrie thought I was a fan of Star Wars and I never told her that I could not have cared less for Star Wars.”
He went on to reveal that this prompted Carrie to divulge the “whole plot” of an upcoming Star Wars film, despite a strict “secrecy” surrounding it.
