Visakhapatnam: Green Visakhapatnam has raised objections to the proposed 500-MW Vizag Hyperscale Data Centre project, alleging violations of environmental regulations and warning of its possible impact on public health and the city’s water resources.
In a press statement, the organisation’s honorary president, Professor Khairagi Reddy, said the project proposed in the Arilova region could pose serious environmental risks. “An AI data centre that threatens the people of the Arilova region is being proposed. If we do not acknowledge and address this danger, our future will be uncertain,” he said.
He alleged that the government had allocated 160 acres of land belonging to the Simhachalam Devasthanam at Adivivaram and Mudasarlova to Google and Adani Data Centre without conducting an environmental impact assessment or seeking public opinion.
Khairagi Reddy warned that the proposed development could lead to the destruction of Simhachalam hills and depletion of the Mudasarlova reservoir, further aggravating drinking water shortages. He also expressed concern over the project’s high power consumption and generator noise affecting nearby residents.
Green Visakhapatnam has announced a public demonstration at RK Beach on August 9, coinciding with Quit India Movement Day, urging citizens to oppose the project.
