Olympian Greg Rutherford has taken aim at Adam Ramsay-Peaty after he was accused of dismissing his bronze medal, the Commonwealth Games and the achievements of others.
The athlete finished third in the 100m breaststroke, surprisingly falling short after his 20-month hiatus but coming out fighting as he attacked his critics in Glasgow. He appeared to reference his family drama after his poor result, but it was his other comments that ticked Greg off.
In what many have taken as a stab at the prestigious event, Adam said in an interview that he throws away all his medals except his treasured Olympic ones – and doesn’t care about the bronze as he only wants gold. The three-time Olympic swimming gold medallist is returning to the pool later and has the chance to defend his men’s 50m breaststroke title after qualifying third fastest for the final.
Greg hopes he can keep a lid on his emotions after his weekend comments caused a stir. He said he thought he “deserves more” than a bronze medal and said he “works a lot harder than what it says on the scoreboard” after the sobering day in Scotland.
When the 31-year-old was pipped by Australia’s Sam Williamson and 18-year-old Filip Nowacki of Jersey, he raised eye-brows after being asked about his first medal competing as Ramsay-Peaty. He said: “Without sounding arrogant, it’s just a piece of metal that’s not really that important. I don’t keep any medals, only the Olympic ones. I have the memories.”
Those remarks didn’t go down well and speaking on TalkSport, Greg and host Natalie Sawyer debated his reaction to the 100m breaststroke aftermath.
“For some of the athletes there, who may only make a final for it to be their absolute world, there will be a level of thinking ‘maybe it’s not good enough’ which I really don’t like,” Greg said. “It’s flippant. They will really look up to him.
“I’ve been there in the heat of the moment – you say things and wish you didn’t. I just think you have to be care, and think of others. Nobody deserves anything in sport, everyone works equally as hard.”
Natalie then added: “I saw another interview where he said he deserved to win for all the work and effort he has put in, which I thought he not the right thing to say.”
Adam married Holly Ramsay in December but hit the headlines after his mum Caroline and and dad Mark Peaty didn’t make the guestlist.
He appearance to reference the family row in his interview, saying: “It’s hard because I know how hard I’ve worked. I know the s**t I’ve been through, which is no fault of my own. It does take a toll.”
The swimming star also took aim at his critics, declaring, “you can’t hurt me” and telling them to “do better.” He was cheered on by his wife, Holly, who is expecting the couple’s first child last this year.
After collecting his medal, he kissed his new wife on the belly and said: “She’s always going to be proud of me. And as a father, it doesn’t matter if you come home with gold. As long as you come home with a teddy. That’s really what matters.
“But I’m never going to be afraid to show weakness, because it’s so important for making stronger people, making stronger men, stronger fathers, husbands. And it’s a realisation of how much I do work.”
