Guntur: In a tragic incident in the district, two teen brothers who went swimming in a freshwater pond on Sunday afternoon were found dead on Monday morning, police said. The incident occurred within Ponnur town limits.
As per reports, the deceased were identified as Sattar Khaja Mohiddin (18) and Shajan (16), sons of Shaik Nazeer and Asifa, residents of the TIDCO housing complex in Nidubrolu. Sattar was a second-year intermediate student at Viveka Junior College in Ponnur. Shajan was a first-year diploma student at RBIT Engineering College in Chebrolu.
With colleges closed on Sunday, the brothers told their mother that they were going out to play and left after 3 p.m. and went to the 100-acre freshwater pond near their home to swim. Police said the pond was full, and the brothers are believed to have drowned.
When the boys did not return by night, their parents filed a missing-persons complaint at the police station. On Monday morning, Asifa went to the pond and found her sons’ clothes and footwear on the bank, raising an alarm. Residents informed the Ponnur police who arrived at the spot. Divers were brought in to trace the boys. They recovered their bodies and shifted them to the Ponnur Government Hospital.
Circle Inspector Kishore Kumar said a case has been registered based on a complaint by Nazeer, and an investigation is under way.
