Gurdial Singh Bajwa, a 51-year-old Sikh of Indian descent, is poised to make history as he runs for a seat in the Austrian National Council elections on September 29. Representing the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), he will contest in the constituencies of Gaenserndorf and Bruck an der Leitha.
Bajwa’s candidacy marks a significant moment for both the Indian and Sikh communities in Austria, underscoring the growing diversity within the nation’s political sphere. Originally from Mudowal village in Punjab, India, he immigrated to Austria with his family at the age of seven. Since 2020, Bajwa has been serving as a city councillor in Deutsch-Wagram and has held the role of Deputy Chairman for Transport and Traffic at the Vienna Chamber of Commerce.
In his campaign, Bajwa emphasizes economic growthequality, and a vision for a brighter future for all Austrians. He aims to resonate with both the Indian diaspora and the broader Austrian electorate. Despite facing challenges, including racist attacks related to his Sikh identity, he remains resolute in his mission. “My candidacy is not just a personal milestone but a victory for diversity and inclusion in Austria’s political landscape,” he stated. He further expressed his ambition to become the first Sikh member of the Austrian parliament if elected, aiming to create a new chapter in the country’s political history.
