EXCLUSIVE: Harry Redknapp shared an update on his wife Sandra’s health after she suffered a life-threatening illness that left her hospitalised

Harry Redknapp has revealed the terrifying, life-threatening experience his wife endured after developing a kidney infection. In 2018, Sandra was urgently admitted to hospital after falling ill while Harry was working away from home.

Initially, the cause of her deteriorating health remained unknown, but medical tests subsequently confirmed she was fighting sepsis – a severe and potentially fatal response to infection.

The NHS states that sepsis can progress extremely rapidly and necessitates immediate hospital treatment.

Fortunately, Sandra received prompt medical care with assistance from family members, which could well have been lifesaving.

The UK Sepsis Trust reports that the condition impacts roughly 245,000 individuals across the UK annually and is responsible for about 48,000 deaths.

Without early detection and swift treatment, it can result in shock, multiple organ failure and prove fatal, reports the Express.

While some patients experience lasting complications following treatment, Harry reports his wife of 59 years is fortunately “all good” and “keeping busy”.

“All good, touch wood, yeah we’re all okay,” he revealed at Shoreditch’s Ruffians Barber Shop for World Cuts, a football-inspired activation from Viagogo and Ruffian.

“I got involved with a sepsis charity [to raise awareness]. It’s quite a scary illness, more people died with sepsis last year than three other major cancers, you’d never believe it. It’s scary.

“We didn’t really know what she had, it’s only when we rushed her to the hospital and she was getting very ill,” the 79-year-old explained.

“I was in London at the time, I was managing, so I wasn’t coming home that night and my family rushed her up to the hospital and it’s lucky [they] did otherwise, if she hadn’t had gone in that night, it could’ve been too late, that’s how dangerous it is,” he continued.

According to the NHS, typical signs of sepsis in adults include:

  • Confusion or slurred speech
  • Uncontrollable shivering
  • Muscle pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Blue, pale, grey or blotchy skin, lips or tongue – on black or brown skin this may be easier to see on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet
  • A high or low temperature – a high temperature is less common in older adults
  • Not peeing all day or peeing very little in the past 18 hours

Anyone who suspects they may be experiencing symptoms of sepsis should seek immediate medical attention.

Meanwhile, Harry also shared an update on his own wellbeing following a recent diagnosis of hearing loss.

The ex-football boss revealed he often neglects to wear his hearing aids, although he insisted everything was under control.

Speaking about how the diagnosis caught him off guard, he said: “I didn’t even think I had a problem until I went for a hearing test and then they said, ‘Oh you’re way down’, so that’s why I got them really.”

The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant has previously labelled his hearing difficulties as “dangerous”, citing examples such as inadvertently leaving his indicators on while driving.

During a joint appearance with his wife on This Morning earlier this year, he acknowledged: “It could’ve caused accidents.”
