Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The sentence comes after a jury found him guilty last year of committing a criminal sexual act against a former assistant.
The victim shared an impact statement in court, saying the assault had had a “devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away”.
She said: “Making the decision to speak up will have me looking over my shoulder for years to come. It is a life sentence for me.
“I’ve been further traumatised in exercising my right to hold him accountable. All of this traces back to his actions.”And she added that she thought about ending her pursuit of justice many times.
While Weinstein, 74, denied any wrongdoing, he apologised to “anyone I may have hurt by my actions”. He said: “I am not a perfect person, but I am a person who has made mistakes,” before adding, “I am not a violent man.”
Before handing down his sentence, judge Curtis Farber excoriated Weinstein. NBC News reported the judge said: “You took what you wanted by force and you have never accepted responsibility.”
Weinstein, has already been behind bars for six years, faced three trials in New York over rape and abuse allegations. He had faced up to 25 years in prison for sexual assault. This is separate to his conviction for sex crimes in Los Angeles.
In July, Weinstein was rushed to hospital after suffering acute heart failure while behind bars. According to reports, the disgraced star began struggling to breathe, and was swiftly transferred to Bellevue Hospital Prison Ward in Manhattan.
It is believed that he was hooked up to an IV and a heart monitor, and put on antibiotics following his battle with pneumonia. Weinstein has faced multiple health issues throughout his time in prison.
He previously underwent emergency heart surgery after experiencing “chest pains”. And in 2024, he was taken to hospital with pneumonia and Covid, and was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia shortly after.
The National Cancer Institute describes his condition as a “type of cancer in which the bone marrow makes a large number of abnormal blood cells.”
More than 100 women came forward with sexual assault and harassment allegations against Weinstein in 2017.
The claims set off the viral #MeToo social media movement. Weinstein has continued to deny all allegations of non-consensual sex.
