Hawthorn have climbed to third on the ladder – leapfrogging Brisbane and Adelaide – after destroying lowly Richmond by 70 points in a lopsided Sunday clash at the MCG.
The Hawks led from start to finish and at one stage appeared on track to notch a 100-point win over the Tigers.
Hawthorn recorded their 12th win of the season, effectively locking in a finals spot, and sit level with the Lions, Crows and Melbourne on the upper rungs of the ladder. Fremantle are virtually certain to win the minor premiership after notching their 18th victory – a win over Port Adelaide on Saturday.
Hawthorn led by 78 points at the final change before the 17th-placed Tigers reeled in some of the deficit.
Jarman Impey led the way for the Hawks on a crisp winter’s day at the MCG, dragging in a match-high 34 possessions. Connor Macdonald, Massimo D’Ambrosio, Josh Battle and captain James Sicily were others to stand out for the Hawks.
One bright note for Richmond was a 500th career goal for spearhead Tom Lynch.
