Actress Hayden Panettiere died from a tragic drug overdose in August and police had been investigating her death, but now the probe into it has been closed

Police have ruled Hayden Panettiere’s death from a drug overdose was accidental and closed the case two months after her tragic passing at the age of just 36.

The actress, famed for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, Xanax and several other drugs in her system, an autopsy completed by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina, said weeks ago. Police continued the probe but have now closed the case, chiefs have confirmed, reports the Daily Star.

The Greenville Police Department said in a statement, obtained by CNN affiliate WYFF: “Based on the Medical Examiner’s determination and the findings of the investigation, Hayden Panettiere’s death has been ruled accidental.” The star was pronounced dead at an apartment in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. She was with ex Brian Hickerson and his brother when she died.

According to CNN, police had been looking into whether the actress had obtained illicit and possibly counterfeit drugs from a dealer in South California. The US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) had reportedly been assisting the police department in their probe into her death.

The coroner’s office had previously ruled her death as accidental and that no signs of trauma were discovered.

Hayden, who shares a daughter with boxing legend ex Vladimir Klitschko, had been open about her issues with substance abuse. She said she was introduced to drugs around the age of 16 and that a member of her team gave her what was described as a “happy pill”.

She told People: “I had no idea that this was not an appropriate thing, or what door that would open for me when it came to my addiction. As I got older, the drugs and alcohol became something I almost couldn’t live without.”
