Chennai:The Madras high court on Thursday declined to quash a private complaint registered by BJP Chennai councillor Uma Anandan against former DMK minister K. Ponmudy for his derogatory remarks on the Saivite and Vaishnavite faiths, besides women.

Ponmudy’s criminal revision petition against the private complaint came up before Justice G.K. Ilanthirayan. In his petition, the former minister had stated that the complaint was not maintainable since it had not made out commission of any offence under sections covering promotion of enmity between different groups, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings and uttering words with intent to wound religious feelings.

He filed the petition since the George Town metropolitan court had taken cognisance of the complaint. The magistrate had ordered summons to Ponmudy in February. So, the minister approached the Madras high court with a criminal revision petition.

Uma Anandan’s complaint was based on a YouTube video of the minister’s speech given in Chennai at an event in April 2025. She said the speech was highly distasteful and promotes enmity between two different groups of people. She said the speech amounted to wounding the religious feelings of the two sects professing Hinduism besides coming under the definition of hate speech.
