Hyderabad:The Telangana High Court on Monday reserved verdict to July 9 in the bail plea filed by Bandi Sai Bageerath, son of Union minister of state Bandi Sanjay Kumar, in a Pocso case registered at Petbasheerabad police station.
Before hearing the matter, the court suspended live-streaming of the proceedings at the request of Bageerath’s counsel, who relied on the guidelines issued by the AP High Court governing the live-streaming of hearings in cases under the Pocso Act. Bageerath is back in jail after a week of interim bail.
Opposing Bageerath’s bail application, public prosecutor Palle Nageshwar Rao submitted that although the investigation was nearing completion and the police were expecting to file the chargesheet shortly, there remained a genuine apprehension that the accused could influence the victim and prosecution witnesses, tamper with evidence, or otherwise impede the course of the trial if released on bail.
Appearing for the victim`s mother, senior counsel Pappu Nageshwar Rao argued that the investigation was not complete despite the prosecution’s claim to the contrary. He contended that several individuals who had allegedly accompanied the accused and the victim during the incidents in question had not been examined by the investigating agency. He expressed concern that witnesses who had given statements might turn hostile during trial due to the political influence associated with the accused’s family.
Senior counsel T. Niranjan Reddy, appearing for Bageerath, argued that the accused had been in judicial custody for more than 40 days and relied on judicial precedents in which bail had been granted in comparable circumstances. He submitted that Bageerath was a student whose academic future had been severely affected by the criminal proceedings.
