He shot 1 under par in his opening round, leaving himself squarely in the middle of the pack.
But Nick Hardy left Thursday at the VidantaWorld Mexico Open a tournament winner.
His story was first spotted by professional story-spotter Monday Q Info (the artist also known as Ryan French), who alerted the world to Hardy’s winning combination of good planning and good fortune in the post below.
Absolutely insane set of circumstances at the Mexico Open:
Nick Hardy made about half a million dollars today. (Stick with me)
Hardy got into the field today as the 3rd alternate. The first two alternates weren’t on site, so when Taylor Moore WD’d with an injury, Nick was in.…

After his round, the man himself shared further details. In short, Hardy — a 30-year-old from Illinois — has been playing this year on both the Korn Ferry and PGA Tours, cobbling together an uncertain schedule thanks to his limited status. That uncertainty extended to this week; it wasn’t until Wednesday, as “fourth or fifth alternate,” that he decided to make the trip to VidantaWorld.
The trip proved well worth it.
Field update for the VidantaWorld Mexico Open:
Taylor Moore WD prior to the start of his first round. Luke List and S.Y. Noh WD from the alternate list. Moore is replaced by Nick Hardy in the 8:00 a.m. MT grouping off No. 1 with Ben Martin and Kevin Roy.

Hardy said he wasn’t sure whether the guys ahead of him on the alternate list would be there, but he woke up Thursday to good news: he was the first alternate on site. The waiting game was on.
“You just never know the day of tournaments,” he said post-round. “I mean, guys don’t feel good from travel, whether it’s getting sick or pulling something in their back, a muscle, you never know.”
Sure enough, then came official word: Taylor Moore was out. Hardy suddenly had a spot in the 8:00 a.m. tee time alongside Ben Martin and Kevin Roy.
“It’s just an amazing feeling to get in,” Hardy said.
Most weeks, a tee time is just the beginning. But this week, for Hardy? A tee time makes him a big winner.
“A lot of my decision to travel was that, like, it’s my 15th start in my fifth year, which means that my retirement cuts plan is vested,” he said. To translate: if you play five full seasons on the PGA Tour, you’re eligible for the Tour’s retirement plan. To be considered a “full season,” you must play 15 events. For guys with full status it’s just a matter of showing up. For guys with limited status? You need some help.
This was Hardy’s 15th start in his fifth season. He’s now crossed that finish line.
“It was incredible,” Hardy said. “My coach is here, Sean Foley, and I was just walking down the fairway like, exaggerating smiles just because he knows how big it is to get another start.”
What’s the retirement plan worth? More with each made cut. Entering the week, Hardy has made 74 cuts in 140 starts. Per French — and via a report from Golf Digest — each cut a player makes is worth $5,000 in retirement. If that number has stayed the same Hardy’s entire career, he’d already be at $370,000, a number that would continue to grow over time.
It also provides something that’s particularly scarce in his current line of work: stability.
“It’s always unknown,” he said of his playing schedule these next few months. “Like obviously very little status out here. It’s just so many unknowns right now for me. I think probably go to Q-School, we’ll see. Hopefully get a couple more starts this fall.
“That’s the hardest part about being a pro golfer in I would say in my position right now is the fact that I don’t really know where I’ll be, I can’t really plan travel. I have to plan a lot of contingency travel plans and that’s just the life of it. It’s pro golf. I think I’m pretty good at dealing with unknowns.”
On Thursday, Hardy rallied from a rocky start to play his final seven holes in three under; a birdie at No. 18 left him 1-under for the round, in the middle of the pack.
“It’s amazing,” he concluded. “My luck’s pretty good right now, so let’s just parlay it into some good golf.”
