TIRUNELVELI: The forest department has prohibited tourists from bathing at the Thalaiyanai check-dam in Kalakkad, and Manimutharu falls, near Ambasamudram, in Tirunelveli district, following rise in the water flow due to continuous rainfall in the hills.

At Kalakkad Thalaiyanai, where visitors usually bathe in water overflowing from the check-dam, the restriction will remain in force until further notice. The department has also prohibited tourists from visiting the eco-tourism site as a precautionary measure, as continued rainfall in the upper reaches could trigger a sudden increase in water flow and pose a threat to tourists.

The restriction was imposed on the orders of the deputy director and wildlife warden of Kalakkad, under whose jurisdiction the Thalaiyanai eco-tourism site in the Kalakkad forest range of the Kalakkad Mundanthurai tiger reserve falls.

At Manimutharu falls, the bathing ban is temporary, with the department allowing tourists to visit the site and enjoy the spectacle of the increased water flow from a safe distance.

The forest department has advised tourists to comply with the restrictions and follow safety instructions until water flow returns to safe levels.
