Not everyone who checks into The White Lotus manages to check out. Mike White’s satirical “eat the rich” series is known for losing characters throughout each sun-soaked season, with many dying or disappearing in some dramatic way. But it seems the coming fourth season hasn’t reserved its shock departures for the screen.

Two-time Oscar-nominated actress Helena Bonham Carter has exited the new season just days into shooting, the producers have announced.

“With filming just under way on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” an HBO Max spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter.

“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

Such a last-minute departure is rare for The White Lotus, a show known for its meticulously particular casting – it brought us Jennifer Coolidge as Tanya McQuoid and Parker Posey as Victoria Ratliff, after all. Bonham Carter, who starred in Fight Club and Sweeney Todd, was largely expected to fill the big-name void left by Coolidge and Posey’s absence. It now remains uncertain who will fill their shoes.

Bonham Carter was reportedly the first actor pursued by White for the fourth season (her casting was confirmed in January), and her character was set to be central to the story. Filming will continue, but it will follow a new schedule to accommodate for the time White needs to rewrite Bonham Carter’s character and for HBO Max to recast it.

Has this happened before?

This is the first time such a big name on The White Lotus docket has exited during filming. However, Miloš Biković left before production began on season three following allegations that he supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Elsewhere, Francesca Corney also departed the season three cast after it was revealed her character needed to be rewritten as older in age. And in April 2025, the series’ Emmy Award-winning composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer quit citing creative differences with White.

When will we see season four?

While season four undergoes rewrites and recasting, it has not been confirmed whether this will shift its expected release date.

Filming is expected to run from late April to the end of October this year. It is therefore likely that the show won’t land on HBO Max until 2027.

Where will the new season take place?

The fourth season of The White Lotus will take us to the French Riviera where the famed Cannes Film Festival takes place each year. Much about the season’s storyline has been kept carefully under wraps, as is custom for White’s mega-hit series, but it has been confirmed that the lavish film festival will act as a backdrop to the season.

It will take place across two luxury hotels: Saint-Tropez’ Airelles Château de la Messardière, which will be known as the “White Lotus du Cap”, and the Hôtel Martinez, named the “White Lotus Cannes”.

Beyond the hotels, the season will be filmed around Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco and Paris.

Carter’s out, but who will still check in?

Despite the major buzz generated by Bonham Carter’s casting (and subsequent exit), The White Lotus is never short of stars.

The fourth season will involve famed British actor Steve Coogan checking into the Cannes hotel, as well as French actor Vincent Cassel (Black Swan), Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games), Sandra Bernhard (The King of Comedy), Rosie Perez, and Heather Graham (Boogie Nights).

It will even welcome an Australian guest: emerging actor Caleb Jonte Edwards, who is largely known for his role on Stan’s Black Snow.

The cast will be rounded out by Dylan Ennis, Corentin Fila, Ari Graynor, Marissa Long, Chris Messina, AJ Michalka, Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Chloe Bennet, Max Greenfield, Frida Gustavsson, Charlie Hall, Jarrad Paul, Ben Schnetzer, and Laura Smet.

Notably, certain characters who survived season three may or may not return after their insane sojourn through Koh Samui, Thailand. For example, Greg (Jon Gries), Tanya McQuoid’s notorious ex, could make a comeback. Additionally, Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), who was swimming in cash by the end of season three, may finally return to open her own spa.

Bonham Carter has largely evaded the spotlight recently, having last appeared in the little known 2025 children’s animation The Land of Sometimes, as well as 2024’s Four Letters of Love. She is set to feature in Enola Holmes 3, as well as Richard Eyre’s The Housekeeper.
