Here’s Why Hugh Grant Is Banned From ‘The Daily Show’

Jon Stewart isn’t the kind of guy who goes around badmouthing guests, so it carries some weight when he names The Daily Show’s worst guest of all time. The winner (or loser) of that designation belongs to cranky Hugh Grant, who earned a lifetime ban from the show back in 2009.

Grant was promoting his forgotten film, Did You Hear About the Morgans?according to Far Out. He arrived at the Daily Show studio complaining that he had other places to be. “He’s giving everyone shit the whole time, and he’s a big pain in the ass,” Stewart told Stephen Colbert at the Montclair Film Festival in 2012.

Among his other complaints, Grant griped to the Daily Show staff about the Morgans video to be shown during his interview, as if they had anything to do with choosing his publicity materials. “What is that clip?” he shouted. “It’s a terrible clip.”

Stewart wasn’t having it. Don’t like the clip? “Well, then make a better fucking movie,” Stewart told the movie star, fed up with this rude behavior. The Daily Show host told Colbert that he would “never” have Grant back again.

At least one other person believes Hugh Grant was a total a-hole that day: Hugh Grant. He took to Twitter, as it was called in those days, to own up to his sins.

“Turns out my inner crab got the better of me with TV producer in 09. Unforgivable,” he posted after Stewart’s rant. “J Stewart correct to give me kicking.”

A few years later, Grant was still copping to his bad behavior. On Watch What Happens Live, the actor wasn’t letting himself off the hook. “I did have a tantrum backstage,” he told Andy Cohen, per Vanity Fair. “About once a year, I have a really mega-tantrum, and sadly (Stewart) witnessed one.”

But are you worthy of forgiveness if the tantrums keep coming, as Grant has admitted? His surly disposition hasn’t gotten much better in recent years. In 2023, he confessed to another outburst on the set of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. (Maybe the problem is all the crappy movies he signs on for.)

“I lost my temper with a woman in my eyeline on day one,” Grant told Total Film, per IndieWire. “I assumed she was some executive from the studio who should have known better. Then it turns out that she’s an extremely nice local woman who was the chaperone of the young girl. Terrible. A lot of groveling… ”

Grovel all you want, Hugh Grant — Stewart isn’t inviting you back. You don’t get a return visit when you’re the worst guest in Daily Show history, and as Stewart noted, “We’ve had dictators on the show.”
