A high mast light providing floodlight to the evening sporting events crashed in the Railway Grounds in Visakhapatnam on Monday due to thunderstorms followed by high velocity winds.
The post standing at a height of 35 meters 50 feet was among the eight high-mast lights that are frequently used for cricket. Fortunately, there were no injuries as the mast fell on the viewers’ side of the stadium. A few people were working on the ground as a part of preparations for Independence Day events.
A video clip showing the mast breaking into two with the top half falling on the west side of the ground became viral in the city.
The lighting system was established in 2018. “It might have crashed due to the high velocity winds that swept the railway station area after a thunderstorm,’’ said cyclone warning centre director PLN Murthy.
Railway sources said an inquiry would be held into the incident.
The CWC director said there was moderate rain measuring up to one centimeter due to the thunderstorm in NAD, Railway Station area, Madhavadhara and airport. There was no rain in the rest of Visakhapatnam city.
Meanwhile, state disaster management authority managing director Prakhar Jain said as of 7pm on Monday, the highest rainfall was recorded at Nakkapalli in Anakapalli district with 6.7cm, followed by Chodavaram (6.5cm), Kothavalasa in Vizianagaram district (6.3cm), Vempadu and Payakaraopeta (5.7cm each), K Kotapadu (5.2mm), Vechalam (5.2cm) and Darlapudi (5.2mm) in Anakapalli district.
He said light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms are likely at isolated places in Alluri Sitarama Raju, Parvathipuram Manyam, Polavaram, Konaseema, East Godavari and West Godavari districts on Tuesday, August 4.
He said the remaining districts are likely to receive isolated light rainfall.
