Historic Kamans in Old City Face Risk of Collapse

Hyderabad: If the structural stability of the Old City’s historic Kamans is anything to go by, disaster is waiting around the corner. Several Kamans from the Qutb Shahi and Asaf Jahi periods have remained in dilapidated condition for years.

Among those requiring urgent attention are Sehar‑e‑Batil Ki Kaman (Charkaman), Shaik Faiz Ki Kaman on Bade Bazaar Road to Dabeerpura, and Hussaini Alam Kaman. The debate over their conservation gained significance after part of Dewan Devdi Kaman collapsed during recent heavy rains.

Heritage activist Mohd Habeebuddin said the Chatta Bazaar Kaman near Dewan Devdi is also in a precarious state. He noted that Dewan Devdi faced similar risk in 2024 and even after restoration, repaired portions are now causing damage. Historians and activists blame official apathy for the neglect.

Terming the condition of all four Kamans in the Charminar courtyard as terrible, activists said Sehar‑e‑Batil Kaman is the worst hit. They warned that construction of nearby buildings is further undermining stability.

Two Kamans of Dewan Devdi — Chatta Bazaar and Hussaini Alam — have also deteriorated. A section of the second Kaman collapsed in heavy rain a few days ago.

Activists stressed the urgent need for heritage committees to inspect structures regularly. Murtuza Musvi said concerns over structural stability are heightened as the 10th Muharram procession will pass through them. He urged authorities to act immediately to preserve and protect the Kamans.

P. Anuradha Reddy, convener of the Hyderabad chapter of Intach (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), said ancient structures represent the city’s culture and must be maintained properly. “It is necessary to conserve them. Several Kamans in the city are neither recognised nor protected,” she added.
