Sherri Papini is grabbing the headlines once again. For those unaware, the dark thriller, Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini, premiered on May 15, 2026, on Netflix. For those unaware, it is based on the real 2016 missing persons case. If you are curious to learn more about the true story behind Hoax, then we have got you covered.

What is the true story behind Hoax: The Kidnapping of Sherri Papini?

Back on November 2, 2016, a woman named Sherri Papini had failed to return home from her daily jog. When her then-husband, Keith Papini, reported her missing, it led to an FBI-assisted nationwide search. Three weeks after she went missing, Sherri was found by a motorist about 150 miles from where her home is in Redding, California. She was reportedly reunited with her family on Thanksgiving Day. What caught everyone’s attention at the time was that Sherri appeared emaciated, visibly bruised, and wearing chains.

When she was questioned by the police, Sherri claimed that she had been abducted at gunpoint by two Hispanic women who not only held her captive but also violently assaulted her. Based on her claims, another investigation was launched in search of Sherri’s alleged captors, who, according to her, were Spanish speakers and fed her mostly tortillas and rice and listened to mariachi music. According to a 2022 report by CNN, Thomas Saenz, the president and general counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defence and Educational Fund (MALDEF) said:

“She fell into stereotypes about the Latino community that are far too prevalent in the population at large, but clearly, she was also counting on law enforcement relying upon stereotypes.”

Well, despite Sherri’s claims, after multiple inconsistencies in her story and according to the DNA evidence found on her clothes, the detectives handling her case were pointed towards her ex-boyfriend, James Reyes. As per reports, Sherri had led James to believe that she needed somewhere to stay as she had just escaped her abusive marriage with her then-husband, Keith Papini. It is worth noting that the claim of them having an abusive marriage was “vehemently denied” by her now-ex-husband.

Afterwards, Sherri Papini admitted that James was actually her abductor and the one behind her injuries. However, opposing her claim, James revealed to investigators that Sherri had asked him to cause her visible injury in order to make her staged kidnapping more believable. To mention, James has never been charged with a crime.

On March 3, 2022, after the investigation concluded, police arrested Sherri Papini on charges of mail fraud and making false statements to federal law enforcement. Six weeks after her arrest, she ended up accepting a plea deal. Reportedly, Sherri was eventually sentenced to 18 months in prison in addition to being ordered to repay over USD 300,000. For those wondering, the sum was to cover the cost of state and federal resources which were expended to find her. While she hadn’t paid the amount, Sherri’s lawyer, William Portanova, claimed that she intended to do so when she could. He said:

“Sherri Papini appreciates the significance of her financial obligations to the Court and to the Government and will continue to meet said obligations as she has promised.”

Where is Sherri Papini now?

In August 2023, Sherri Papini was granted an early release from prison. According to a report by People, she was then transferred to a residential reentry facility in Sacramento County, California. By October that year, Sherri had already left the home, eight months earlier than what was scheduled. The same report suggests that Sherri will remain on supervised release until late 2026.
