Hoffenheim returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga thanks to goals from Fisnik Asllani and Tim Lemperle providing a 2-1 win to see them head into the international break in 9th place. The match was also marked by injury concerns for Schalke, with both goalkeeper Loris Karius and Robin Gosens forced off during the contest.

Hoffenheim made the perfect start when Asllani opened the scoring after just 10 minutes. Schalke goalkeeper Karius was at fault for the goal after attempting to play the ball out from the back, only to see his pass intercepted by the alert Hoffenheim forward, who guided the ball into the net.

The visitors responded positively to falling behind, with Adil Aouchiche going close to an equaliser in the 14th minute. However, Oliver Baumann produced an excellent save to deny the Schalke attacker after Kenan Karaman had created the opportunity.

Schalke’s failure to take advantage of their promising start was punished when Hoffenheim doubled their advantage in the 26th minute. Following some patient build-up play, Tim Lemperle exchanged passes with Asllani before calmly slotting the ball past Karius to make it 2-0.

Christian Ilzer’s side continued to threaten before the break, with Alexander Prass firing narrowly over after being played through by Lemperle. Robin Gosens also had an opportunity at the other end, but his attempted volley failed to trouble Baumann.

The second half began with a significant setback for Schalke. In the 47th minute, Karius produced an excellent save to deny Asllani, but the goalkeeper subsequently collided with his own defender Gosens as the latter attempted to reach the rebound.

Both players required treatment and were unable to continue. Karius was replaced by Kevin Müller, while Vitalie Becker came on for Gosens in a double injury blow for Miron Muslić’s side.

Schalke nevertheless continued to search for a way back into the contest. Soufiane El-Faouzi came particularly close in the 57th minute, striking the crossbar after Baumann had initially saved an effort from Becker.

Hoffenheim thought they had added a third goal shortly afterwards, but Andrej Kramarić was ruled offside. At the other end, Junior Adamu squandered a golden opportunity in the 72nd minute, firing wide from close range after his attempt was deflected by Vladimír Coufal.

Schalke eventually found a breakthrough in the 81st minute. Edin Džeko’s header was initially saved by Baumann, but the rebound fell kindly for Adamu, who made no mistake from close range to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The late goal gave Schalke renewed hope, but Hoffenheim managed to hold on during the closing stages to secure all three points.

The result gives Ilzer’s team an important Bundesliga victory, while Schalke are left to reflect on a frustrating evening in Sinsheim. Despite their second-half improvement and late goal, Muslić’s side were ultimately unable to recover from their costly first-half mistakes.
