Holly Willoughby says her new YouTube show has been inspired by her husband Dan Baldwin and their three children, even if her daughter cringed at some of her early efforts to be a social media sensation.
The former This Morning star – who has Harry, 17, Belle, 15 and Chester, 11, with her husband Dan – is moving away from traditional TV formats to launch her own online show, Together, which kicks off this week. It is her first big return to broadcasting after she stepped down from This Morning in 2023.
Today, Holly, 45, appeared on BBC Radio 2 with Sara Cox to promote her first solo venture since her departure.
Speaking to Sara, she said: “Well my daughter was laughing at me as I was saying, ‘and subscribe and ding the bell and you’ll get notifications’. She was like, mum you really don’t know what you’re talking about and I was like, no but I’m learning!”
Holly said she has spent a lot more time with her three children after leaving This Morning and her youngsters inspired her decision to bring the show to YouTube.
“I had a bit of time off and watching them, and they’d go to Netflix, Disney or Amazon and they’ll be watching YouTube. When podcasts moved into being more visual, I’d watch those. It feels like everyone’s doing the same thing,” she said, “You can create these mini worlds and people can find you and be a part of it.”
The new show is being produced by husband Dan’s production company Hungry Bear Media. Speaking about working alongside her husband, she said: “I had this idea and I thought who better to make it and who do I trust more. Hungry Bear make brilliant shows and I just thought it was a perfect fit, it was a no brainer really.”
Holly made the decision to leave This Morning after 14 years shortly after co-star Phillip Schofield ‘unwise but not illegal affair’ with a younger male colleague came to light.
The scandal was followed by Holly being the intended target in a horrific rape, murder case.
Speaking about the ordeal, Holly said: “Obviously everybody knew what happened and it was a difficult time. Everybody in their own way goes through something. I needed a bit of time out, just to come to terms with everything,” she explained at her show launch, “I needed a little space and time with family and my friends, just to be away from work.”
Holly credits her children and her husband Dan, for getting her through what was a very tough time. “Life moves on, and I’m a mum, and I have my kids, and my husband, and all the important stuff in life,” she said.
“If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s don’t look too far into the future. It’s just day by day. Let’s just see what happens. I’m now doing this with my husband, and this feels like the right time to be doing this.”
Holly’s new show features cooking tutorials, real life interviews, fashion advice and wellness tips as well as some guest appearances from celebrity guests including Stanley Tucci, Nicole Appleton, Katherine Ryan, Emma Bunton, Rob Beckett and Joanne McNally.
“I have a glass of wine, sit and cook a really nice meal and just have a laugh. I think laughter really is the best medicine. It’s the most important thing. You can diffuse any situation,” she said.
“If I’m having a rubbish day I’ll find myself going on YouTube, watching things that make me laugh. Even if it’s stupid cat videos. My daughter is like, ‘Stop sending me cat videos!’ I can’t help it, it makes me laugh. I think you’ve just got to find those things. Find those little bits of joy.”
