Hollywood star John Goodman, known for his roles in sitcom Roseanne and the live-action adaptation of The Flintstones, has shown off his weight loss after shedding 200lbs.
Hollywood star John Goodman has shown off his new look after shedding more than 14 stone. The actor, 74, found fame as Dan Conner on the sitcom Roseanne in the late 1980s and memorably starred as Fred Flintsone in the live action of The Flintstones in 1994.
He has also starred in hits like Barton Fink, and The Big Lebowski, headed up the Disney-Pixar franchise Monsters Inc by voicing the role of Sulley, and more recently Smurfs, Chili Finger, and The Freak Brothers.
At the premiere of his latest project Digger, the actor looked noticeably thinner and as he showed off the weight loss he has achieved over the last few years. In his new role, John plays President Compson, the President of the United States, and stars alongside Tom Cruise as eccentric oil baron Digger Rockwell in the black comedy film.
For the glamorous event, John cosied up alongside his wife Anna Beth, whom he tied the knot with in 1989, and was suited and booted for the event.
The actor has been open and honest about his health in the past, and his weight was often the basis for jokes on the sitcom that made him famous. Just under 20 years ago, John decided to stop drinking and around that time, it’s thought that he weighed around 28 stone (398lbs).
Three years later, he had managed to shift seven stone by cutting out sugar and exercising six days a week. At the time, he enlisted the help of Serena Williams’ trainer Mackie Shilstone who explained at the time that he had put John on a Mediterranean-style diet and instructed him to do up to 12,000 steps a day on the treadmill.
The fitness instructor recalled to People that John had told him he “remembers what it feels like to be extremely heavy and it’s something he doesn’t want again.”
John also spoke of learning about “portion control,” and by 2018 had managed to lose a further seven stone. He previously told ABC : “I’d have a handful of food, and it’d go to my mouth. I was just eating all the time.
“I was just eating alcoholically. In the old days, I would take three months out, lose 60 or 70 pounds, and then reward myself with a six-pack of Bud or whatever and just go back to my old habits.”
The star also took up boxing, and when asked about his decision to take up the sport, he told Rolling Stone in 2023: “I dug that. I dug it. Yeah. Nobody’s going to get hurt, but it’s just hitting the mitts and trying to learn. Just hitting the mitts.
“I never got good enough where I would trust myself to spar because once I get whacked in the face, I don’t know if I wouldn’t lose it.”
